Two and a half years ago I adopted the sweetest pit bull named Oliver. He has really inspired me to develop compassion and empathy for the plight of abandoned, neglected and abused dogs. Whenever I can lend my photography skills to help their cause, I jump on the opportunity.

“I’m going home!” Those three words pretty much changed my life.

I have to admit, before I started doing rescue photography, I had never been in my local animal shelter. I had two rescue dogs, but they came to me through friends. One day, my phone rang and a former photography student asked if I knew anyone who could help out at the shelter taking photos of their animals. I don’t know why, but I said, “Sure, me!”

I first discovered my spark for photography when I posed for portraits for my cousin during a stay in the Philippines. Little did I know at the time what a profound impact it would have on my life, as I also picked up a camera and began capturing the world around me.

I have always loved photography. When I was younger, I studied photography on my own and in my free time. As I grew older, my photography took a backseat to the other aspects of my life.

How an Unpublished Novel Gave me a New Leash on Life

In the winter of 1996, I sat at my desk awaiting a life-changing call. I’d spent 3 years writing a legal thriller about an ancient tablet containing an undecipherable equation which promised to answer the mystery of existence. The novel was being auctioned to several publishing houses by my agent, Russell & Volkening, a firm that represented a Nobel Prize winner and several literary giants. After 19 years as a business litigator, it was time to make a change.

"A photograph is like a smile, it’s of no use unless you share it.”

I had taken photos of a client’s dogs one summer just for fun. That fall, I received a voice mail from her and she was crying. The older dog had passed away and she wanted thank me for the beautiful pictures I had given her. She said they were the only decent photographs she had of her elderly dog and how much it meant to her. I figured if something so simple as photographing a person’s pets can make someone so happy, than I would try to make as many people as happy as I could. In turn, I’ve created that happiness for myself as well.
